Powering into Spring

Powering into Spring

Coming into Spring and the warmer weather is the time for all boat owners to start getting prepared for the boating season.

Power boats, and others, frequently have a musty loo smell pervading the boat. Sometimes the owners do not notice it as they are used to the smell. However, friends or guests most certainly do! It is caused by two factors.

  • The inert sludge at the bottom of the holding tank contains rotting material due to bacterial inactivity.
  • More likely the smell leaching through the excrement coated plastic hoses leading from the ‘heads’ to the holding tank is the cause. Just like the smell in the detergent aisle of a supermarket – yet all are sealed.

Noflex Digestor, made in Vancouver, is specifically manufactured for the large boating population on the West coast. In these areas ocean discharge is not permitted, and boats must pump out.

Noflex is also used on ferries and naval ships. Here in Australia various super yachts also rely on Noflex to ensure the digestion process in holding tanks are working properly and keeping the smells at bay.

The charcoal filters on the outlet vents become superfluous when Noflex is used. They are not that effective in any case.

Noflex comes in a 475-gram pot and only a tablespoonful per person per week will keep the toilet system in good working condition once the initial small has been eliminated. Two spoonfuls flushed into the holding tank at the end of a cruise or when the boat is not going to be used for a while is good insurance against those stale smells.
